Not Much Hope for Hawaii Contests

Budget Just Not There

The 2 WQS contests hoped to be run at Sunset Beach and Pipeline look to be in jeopardy.  The budget numbers just don't work out.

It could be done as two 4 star events, but the sponsors want 5 star events with 6 star points.  The WQS has raised the purses for events above 1 star, and in this economy, I believe you will see more events fall off of the schedule.

It is a shame for Hawaiian and North American surfers to lose these contests.  You need all the points you can get before the seed point reshuffle at mid year.  There is the Inlet Contest and a 2 Star at Huntington, but Trestles and the US Open are now 6 star prime events, limiting the amount of surfers allowed to enter, and leaving you out if you aren't in the top 150.
