47th Ron Jon Easter Surfing Festival 2011 Cocoa Beach, Florida

There was so much more for the spectators, including FREE surf and skim clinics, trampoline demos, pro skate halfpipe demos, celebrity/pro athlete autograph signings, the steel drum band Pantasia in concert, and the Bethany Hamilton documentary “Heart of a Soul Surfer” playing on a big screen at the pier for Friday night.

I loved the enthusiasm from the Surfrider tent, which was manned by passionate members dedicated to the health of our beaches and ocean.  They gave out a lot of good info over the weekend and I witnessed them getting tons of spectators involved in an onsite, on-going beach cleanup.  What a great idea guys… way to go!

Saturday’s after-parties included the opening of “Kelly… The Exhibit” at the Cocoa Beach Surf Museum and “Party in Paradise” with DJ Jimmy South at Paradise Cove.  I attended the Kelly exhibit opening, which featured pictures and memorabilia from Kelly’s early days in Cocoa Beach all the way up to his rise as a 10-time World Champion surfer.  As with the many events Cocoa Beach has held to honor our beloved native son, I was once again touched with the genuine love Kelly’s family, friends, and fans have for him.  Our town is so proud of not only his incredible accomplishments as a professional surfer, but also his strength of character—both of which are depicted in the exhibit.

All of the people most involved in Brevard’s surf culture were present at the event to pay tribute to Kelly.  The beautiful mellow surf rock of the Honey Miller Band provided an excellent soundtrack to the evening.  The vibe was the quiet reverence you'd expect to find at a museum opening night but done in the laid-back surfer style.

Just another colorful, fun weekend that makes me remember why I live in one of the best places on the globe.
