Rip Pics Longboard Classic

This past Saturday, March 17, the 2012 Rip Pics Longboard Classic took over the beach at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach—a great way to kick off the surf competition season here in town. Tons of local Brevard surfers, spectators, and volunteers showed up for this event that benefitted the Sea Turtle Preservation Society. The event was strictly a longboard-only contest, featuring Men’s and Women’s Pro events with purses of $500 each. In addition, there were amateur divisions for men and women of every age group. The surfers and spectators enjoyed beautiful weather and fairly decent waves for the St. Patrick’s Day weekend, with several sponsors such as Spy Optics and local businesses such as Endless Summer Tattoo and Salty Sweet Clothing in attendance. In fact, my good friends Mark Longenecker and Jimmy South of Endless Summer Tattoo even competed in the Men’s Ages 31-39 division to show additional support for the event they were sponsoring. It was so fun to see these two characters “bro down” in competition, placing 1st and 2nd, respectively. Way to go Team Endless Summer! Among other results, Cocoa Beach local Brent Russell placed first in the Pro Men’s, and Jesse Restivo of Satellite Beach placed first in the Pro Women’s, with both scoring a nice purse of $500 each. Congrats Brent and Jesse.. Story by Courtney and Photos by Jessica Lynn Williams...
