2011 Slater Brothers Golf Tourney at Cocoa Beach Country Club

Cocoa Beach Florida

The adventures of Indy and the golf underground...

A game played on a large open-air course, in which a small hard ball is struck with a club into a series of small holes in the ground...

Webster describes this wonderful game in the simplest of way’s but those of us who are hooked know it to be a different story. Come with me and my motley foursome as we travel to all of your favorite courses. We will keep you informed and entertained as we crack the traditional mold of the entitled golfer.

Our first outing was the inaugural Slater Brothers Charity Golf Scramble held at the Cocoa Beach Country Club. Kelly Slater in case you live under a rock is surfing’s 10x World Champion. With his brother ’s Sean and Steven (Skippy) put this together to raise awareness and educate the world about skin cancer.

Arriving at the course we were barraged by a who’s who of local surfers and golfers supporting this important cause. Joined by “Lefty” a guy you hear coming before you see him and Wicker the “Bronzed Aussie” we waited on our anchor Cartier an elite player in the 300 yard plus club.
We sign in and purchase eight mulligan’s (I love scrambles) and head to our carts, Lefty and Wicker in one and Cartier and I in the other. After a few putts and a couple of drives on the practice range we were ready for some Golf!

We started on #6 at the River course one of the three nines here at Cocoa Beach CC were they just finished a green’s restoration project and with a different name for each hole that gives this unique course a flavor all its own.

It was apparent after the first drive as it headed strait down the pipe that this was going to be a great day. As we made our way from hole to hole a pattern emerged with Cartier and Wicker trading 300 yard drives and Lefty and I working our short game magic, the score card had more Fowl on it than a Thanksgiving day table.

Funny things always happen on the golf course all the time and with that in mind some players fueled by massive amounts of alcohol make bad choices, instead of laying up they go for it. Wilson and Jim Bob chasing birds instead of playing golf found themselves in one of those situations. As I approached all I could see was a golf cart half submerged in a canal that ran along the hole and Jim Bob up to his knees in his Playboy pj’s trying to lift the cart out of the water! Well it finally took him and six of his close friends to rescue the cart from it’s watery grave.

It was good to see Rhett and his Rusty’s team out there having a good time, Rhett’s a pretty good golfer but a great restaurateur! Along with Tommy “O” Philip Waters and Blake Jones fun was had by everyone. Before we knew it we were on the 3rd. Hole which was the hole in one prize hole and the booty was a 2010 Mercedes 300, just a beautiful car. When you stand there on the box you imagine yourself driving away waving to your friends, but today for Indy that was not going to happen. I took my best shot and duck hooked it into the Indian river! Better luck next time. It was Cartier that put us close for our birdie putt.

After our round we all headed back for some food and raffles at the outdoor pavilion, the place was just buzzing! We all won some nice tee shirts and a couple of hat’s so I decided to head to the car and stow my stuff, when I returned everybody was screaming that we won! It came down to a tie that was broken when on the scorecard we had birdied the hardest hole on the course making us defending champions next year. After we received our original trophies still stunned all we could do is smile.

So remember if your not having fun out there take up bowling give us all a break cause always remember that there are two sides to the rope, the side that the Pro’s are on and the other side where the rest of us are!

Look for our visit to Celebration cause now you’re a member here at the golf underground. 2011 Slater Brothers Golf Tourney at Cocoa Beach Country Club
