Killer Concert on their Overwater Deck...

On Saturday, April 14, Sashamon played a great show at Rusty’s in Port Canaveral under a beautiful, starry Spring sky.  I love seeing shows under the stars on Rusty’s new outdoor deck, which overlooks the water. It is spacious enough to accommodate several tables and a dance floor, yet small enough that it still feels like an intimate music venue.

It’s always fun to go see great live music in this setting with familiar faces from around my hometown of Cocoa Beach.  Indeed, the Jah-waiian style of Sashamon drew the surf-scene locals out in full-force.  The locals were joined by many visiting tourists who got to partake in a great example of what our town is all about—kicking back and enjoying life amongst our beautiful outdoor surroundings.

Sashamon is an up-and-coming artist from Hawaii, who more or less stumbled accidentally into musical fame.  His deep love of music stems from his childhood, when he used to sing along with the ukulele-strumming Kupuna (respected elders) in Moloka'i.  In his adult life, Sashamon shared a few demo songs within the community of Hawaiian surfers, and before he knew it, radio stations throughout the islands were receiving requests for his tunes and playing them regularly in rotation.

From there, Sashamon’s music spread through California and around the world-wide surf community, helped in part by surf films such as Jamie O’Brien’s “Freak Show” and “Freak Side,” which featured his songs.  Today, Sashamon tours across the United States and sometimes internationally, and is regularly invited to open for many huge reggae acts such as Alpha Blondy, Israel Vibration, Maxi Priest, Slightly Stoopid, Rebelution, and SOJA.

Sashamon certainly came off as a seasoned performer during his time at Rusty's.  His at-ease stage presence made the audience feel relaxed and happy.  His melodic, rhythmic, positive tunes had the crowd dancing throughout the entire performance.  It was fun to be out on the dance floor with many friends and see smiles across everyone’s faces!

I am new to Sashamon’s music but I do recall that he played several hit songs that the crowd knew, most notably the hit song “Necta” and the extended reggae jam “Peaceizafiya.”  Though I was weary from being at the port for several hours prior to the show, it turned out I was so happy I stayed because it was a REALLY fun, laid-back show!  Look for Sashamon to return to our town soon, for I predict that his musical momentum, especially within the surf scene, is only just beginning to build.
