The Supervillains 4th Annual Beach Bash in Satellite Beach
July in Brevard County: it’s a hot time for blazing summer events such as the highly anticipated annual Beach Bash in Satellite Beach! Each year, Sports Page hosts this all-day concert outside in their parking lot, despite the intense summertime heat. This year, Deuterman Productions put a cool spin on the event by adding an Olympic-size pool directly in front of the stage, so the concert goers could “chill out” while enjoying the show.
The Supervillains 4th Annual Beach Bash showcased 14 bands and four DJs from across the state of Florida. The show kicked off at high noon with local reggae-rock favorites Pakalolo of Melbourne rocking the early crowd and creating a fun vibe to set the day off the right way. As the crowd grew, Special Blend (Palm Bay), Bless Ed (Clearwater), and UNRB (Tampa) each delivered a solid performance to keep the party going strong. After the first four bands, the Beach Bash hosted a bikini contest featuring contestants from all over Florida.
During the sweltering afternoon temps, a large portion of the crowd did indeed seek refuge in the watery oasis of the stage-front pool. It was really neat to see the party guests floating on rafts, hanging in inner tubes, playing with beach balls, splashing, wrestling, dancing and playing while enjoying great live music.
My favorite aquatic spectacle was during punk rockers Better Way Forward’s heavy-hitting set: an in-pool mosh pit! I shared BWF’s lead singer’s sentiment: “I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
After the liquid thrash-fest, reggae-rock Vero locals Kayavibe took the stage to restore a mellower mood. I have seen this band at other Deuterman Productions events, and they never disappoint. This time was no exception; Kayavibe sounded superb. Just like many of the other bands on the bill at the Beach Bash, I think these guys have just as much artistic talent and ability as the best reggae-rock acts in the business like Slightly Stoopid or Rebelution. I am continually impressed with the level of talent we have coming from our local bands in Florida.
Big up to Deuterman Productions for showcasing these exceptional bands in the best way possible with absolute top-notch sound--loud, clear, and perfectly balanced. From the first band to the very last, the sound quality remained outstanding throughout the day--unless, of course, you lived in one of the luxury beachfront condos across the street and were hoping to catch a nap.
As the afternoon turned to evening, the Beach Bash grew rowdier and rowdier. By the time headliners The Supervillains took the stage, it was all but complete mayhem in the pool. Girls in teeny bikinis danced on the catwalk that extended out over the pool while getting splashed from below. In fact, no one within a 20-foot radius of the pool was safe from the splashing, causing the landlubbers to create a wide berth around the pool. I even got my camera equipment splashed a couple times. I cringed as an enormous, wildly inebriated fan did the most animated, all-out skank dance on the slick catwalk platform. You could feel the entire crowd anticipating his demise; and sure enough, he ended up losing both feet from underneath him and landing on his side on the platform. Thankfully, he was OK, and made a frog-leap back into the pool to put an end to his sideshow.
Anyhow, The Supervillains do not headline this huge event without good reason—the band is completely awesome with tight delivery of artistic reggae-rock tunes. Though their original tunes are the best, I also loved their adaptation of Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out” called “Pervin’ Out,” which has a much heavier guitar sound than the original. The crowd loved it too--the band had everyone in-pool and out grooving to their sound.
Equally entertaining were co-headliners The Crazy Carls (pop/rock) and Whole Wheat Bread (punk rock), who always get the crowd moving with excellent sets. Other notable standouts for the day included indie hip-hop act Ticklefoot from Vero Beach and metal rockers Hair of the Beast from New Smyrna Beach. Be sure to check out these up-and-coming bands as they play more shows across the state in the months to come.
The night ended with a V.I.P. After Party inside the Sports Page. As Robbie Deuterman of Deuterman Productions explained, the after party is unique and fun in that “the crowd [gets] to intermingle with the superstars” in a party atmosphere after the show.
All in all, there’s no doubt that this year’s Beach Bash was a smash hit, perhaps even more so than years past thanks to the killer addition of the stage-front pool! Congrats to Deuterman Productions and the Sports Page for another successful event.
