Kapn Bone Food Review Petra's Mediterranean

Hey it’s your good old Kapn’ Bone here and tonight we are going to the Middle East and were not talkin’ Tennessee!

Buddha and I had the pleasure to dine at Petras a new Middle East/Mediterranean Restaurant right here in the center of Brevard County at 31 East New Haven Avenue. A family operated establishment in it’s first year of business. We were greeted by Sterling our waiter for the evening, a former patron to Petras. Story has it that he ate there everyday and Mike (the Owner) offered him a job and the rest is history!

Middle Eastern cuisine is a refined art.  It is influenced by dozens of cultures, and its spicy dishes reflect the fact that the Middle East was either the source or the way station for spices that came to Europe from all over Asia. Lamb, rice and various legumes (especially lentils and chickpeas)  are staples of main course dishes. Many dishes use burghul (cracked wheat or smead) in salads and chopped meat combinations.  Middle East foods include lots of salads made from both fresh vegetables in season, and cooked or pickled vegetables, and fruit in quantities.

Our first taste was the Sampler Platter with hommous, babaganoush, falafel and tabouleh served with freshly made Pita Bread. If your not familiar with these items your good old Kapn’Bone will walk you through, hommous is made with chick peas and tahini, fresh garlic, lemon juice topped extra virgin olive oil. babaganoush, Baked eggplant with tahini ,garlic and lemon juice and don’t forget the olive oil and it’s just fun to say! On to the falafel, this is deep fried chick peas with onion and parsley add cumin and light curry flavor. And last but not least tabouleh a mixture of freshly chopped parsley, onions, cucumber with bulgur (cracked wheat). It would be hard to pick a favorite dish here, everything was just so unique and tasty that Sterling our waiter had to remind us to stop at the design on the plate!

We moved on to our entrée’, this was the special that night Cornish Hen Shawarma, cooked to order over a bed of rice, this was fantastic, the hen fell off the bone and the rice was teaming with all kinds of flavor. We then tried the three Kabobs on the menu beef, chicken and lamb. Nice and juicy with a grill flavor. The chicken kabob was brushed with curry and cumin. The lamb and beef were equally as good. To go along with the meal was spinach pie, again made to order a dough stuffed with spinach garlic sumac (mild lemon based spice). For dessert we enjoyed balaklava this is one of my favorite desserts, light crispy and honey drenched, heavenlyJ

This was the best Middle Eastern food that I have ever tasted! Petras is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. They have a beer and wine and tobacco license so you can enjoy a nice hookah smoke with your appetizer watching the traffic ebb and flow. Check out their web site at www.petrasflorida.com Another great thing about Petras is the pricing So reasonable and everything is made to order. So when your looking to expand your taste and have a hungry family Petras is the place for you and don’t forget to tell them Kapn’ Bone sent you!
