“OCEAN MOTION!” BARRIER ISLAND CENTER JUNE 2012 EVENTS

*“Ocean Motion & Much More!” Eco-Explorers Summer Camp for Ages 9 to 15*
Make special connections with ocean to lagoon habitats and wildlife while sharing fun adventures on the water! Camp
availability is still left for the week of June 11-15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $240 and includes certified aquatic
instructors, equipment, a t-shirt and complimentary guided sea turtle walk with preferred reservation! Enrollment is limited
to 13 campers per week. Call 321.723.3556 for availability and enrollment.
*Turtle Walks* - Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays @ 9 p.m.
Join a presentation and guided walk to learn about and observe threatened loggerhead sea turtles nesting on the beaches
of the barrier island. Donation of $10 is non-refundable. Reservations are limited to 20 each night and walks are filling up
fast. Additional walks will be held in July and the 1st week in August. Call 321.723.3556 for availability.
Oyster Mat Making - Tuesday, June 5th @ 9 am
Celebrate World Environment Day by helping The Brevard Zoo with their community project to restore oyster reefs in the
Mosquito Lagoon of North Brevard County. Educational presentation to precede mat making. Volunteering is fun,
rewarding and best of all free!
“Coral Reef Adventure” - Saturday, June 9th @ 1 & 3 p.m.
Beat the heat by joining us for a special showing of “Coral Reef Adventure”. Experience some of the world's most vibrant
and endangered coral reefs on the big screen. All in recognition of World Ocean Day!
“World Sea Turtle Day” Party! - Saturday, June 16th from 1 to 3 p.m.
Join us to celebrate Dr. Archie Carr’s birthday and his conservation efforts while helping to ensure the future survival of this
ancient ocean species. Create a “Savings for Sea Turtles” gift box from recycled materials. Then help to fill the box with
conservation funds to re-gift to the Sea Turtle Conservancy. Enjoy light refreshments. Limited to 15. Call 321.723.3556 to

“Predator Crabs of Antarctica” Presentation - Sunday, June 24th @ 2pm
Come chill with Florida Tech Research Assistant, Stephanie Vos, as she teaches you all about the predatory King Crabs
invading Antarctica, what’s causing the invasion and what you can do to help prevent it (even if you don’t live at the south
pole).
“Hook-A-Book” Kids Book Club - Saturday, June 30th @ 10am
Let us help you “hook” your kids on reading - even during summer break! Join us for our 2nd ocean adventure as we gather
to discuss the new book and participate in a topic related activity. This month’s book will be “Into the Sea” by Brenda
Guiberson - winner of the “Children's Literature Top Choice” Award. Enrollment is limited to 10 children, ages 5-10. Please
call to make your reservation. There is no cost to participate; however, the book may be purchased at a 10% discount from
our Mermaids Purse Gift Shop. Additional copies are available at your local public library. Don’t forget to read the book in
advance.
*Tour de Turtles 2012 Social & Silent Auction* - Saturday, July 28th @ 6 p.m.
Kick-off Tour de Turtles with a celebration featuring hors d'oeuvres, refreshments, local artists and music. Tickets are
available for advance purchase, starting in June, online or at the Barrier Island Center for $20. The deadline to purchase
advance tickets is midnight July 20th. Tickets will also be available at the door for $35. Sea Turtle Conservancy is also
