Advice on surfing in SF Bay Area

Hey all,

I’ve been surfing for about 12 years and I’m from florida and learned to surf there. I’ve been living in the Bay Area for about a year and a half now. In that time, the only surfing I’ve done is when I’ve gone back to florida to visit my family. Needless to say, I’m dying to get back in the water.

But, I’ve never surfed in the pacific, and I know it’s a very different beast from the Atlantic. I also have no idea where to go, since I need a spot that won’t kill me and where I won’t piss a ton of people off by floundering around until I get my feet under me.

All this to say, can anyone here offer some advice for my situation? Specifically, any easy spots to go get familiar with and really whatever other tips may be helpful.

TLDR: Out of practice guy who grew up surfing in Florida looking for pointers and spot recommendations in the SF Bay Area so he doesn’t die and doesn’t get in peoples way.

Thanks a ton.

RE:Advice on surfing in SF Bay Area

I've visited a few times I but have never tried surfing the Bay area.  I do hear that the Patch in Bolinas Beach is a good beginner spot because the reef there blocks a lot of the swell taming things down quite a bit.
