2011 DUB MASSIVE hit the Cocoa Beach Sandbar.

This past Saturday, the 2011 DUB MASSIVE hit the Cocoa Beach Sandbar.  For the past five years, Dub Massive has been THE party of the year for people who love reggae music, and this year was no exception.

The masses certainly turned out for this party that is put on by Cocoa Beach local Mark Longenecker of Endless Summer Tattoo to benefit the National Suicide Hotline.  Dub Massive is reminiscent of Caribbean street parties and dancehalls; not only do Florida’s top reggae DJs play the best in reggae dancehall music old and new, but also the MCs perform live over instrumental tracks called riddims.

The vibe was definitely a positive one all night.  As Mark put it, it was unlike your average bar scene in that no one got in a fight or got kicked out (this year).  That’s saying a lot when you have the Sandbar at full capacity and Red Stripe and rum flowing like water.

Perhaps all the sunglass-wearing on the dance floor helped everyone keep their cool.  Indeed, half the fun of the party is that everyone shows up dressed quite colorfully—usually in varieties of red, gold and green.

The night started around 8pm with DJ Jimmy South playing roots and ska.  Next was Frankie Sly, who both DJed and MCed with his killer island accent.  The party started to heat up as the crowd started to grow, and as each subsequent DJ crushed it: Ragga P, Soufside Rudeboys, Longneck, and White Abbot.  What can I say, each and every one of them sounded GREAT.  There was a definite emphasis on classic dancehall tunes, with a few of the newer tunes in the mix.  I loved all the throwback tunes that gave the party that funky, gritty vibe and kept us dancing all night long.

Next, the MCs took over—White Abbot, Ragga P, RT, and Badda Skat--who sang original songs over his own original riddims.  It was awesome to see all of them vibing and dancing together with the DJs up on stage, which really kept all of us in the crowd into it.

Miami’s Lance-O of Kulcha Shok Music DJed after the MCs.  The crowd was already so pumped and just exploded during his set.  Or at least it seemed that way to me; with the energy growing and growing all night, my friends and I definitely hit our party peak right around the time Lance-O went on.  It helped that he played a lot of our favorite songs.  Also, he was super pumped on the party, shouting excitedly over the mic and jumping around, and it was contagious.

The party ended with DJs J. Boogie and Nick Michael’s electro sets.  This was around the time my friends decided they must eat Moons Over My Hammy sandwiches at Denny’s, so I actually left before the Sandbar closed.  But J and Nick sounded awesome like they always do, and kept the party going right up until the end.

In other notable Dub Massive 2011 happenings, photographer Dominic Agostini won the raffle for the surfboard hand-painted by Mark Longenecker.  It was a pretty classic moment because Dominic was waiting onstage to take the winner’s picture when he himself had his name called out as winner.  Only downside is that there was no photographer to take his picture as he accepted his prize!

Longenecker said he is very happy with how this year’s party turned out.  Nearly everyone who had said they were coming out to support the cause and enjoy the party did turn up, with the Sandbar quickly reaching capacity.  Good vibes and FUN all night.  The surfboard raffle raised $500 for the National Suicide Hotline.  All of the DJs and MCs were on time and did a great job.  Jimmy South was put in charge of sound, and he successfully kept the party going all night long.  No easy feat considering the DJs all used different equipment and systems.  BIG UP to Mark, Jimmy, the Sandbar, and ALL of the DJs and MCs who once again made Dub Massive the party of the year.

Until July 31st, that is.  Get ready for this people: DUB MASSIVE BEACH PARTY.  That’s right!  Mark will team up with Tropical Productions’ George Toler to bring DUB MASSIVE to the beach at the Crowne Plaza, in conjunction with JAMAIKIN’ ME CRAZY that takes place there every Sunday, March through October.  Surf Guru will definitely be there, and we'll keep you posted on this huge event!
