Drew Mesiano North Florida Fishing Photos

Old man winter has officially arrived in North Florida. To some, cold weather is a deterrent to the outdoors. But, for Jacksonville and surrounding areas fishermen in the know, we relish the cold weather. Redfish move into the shallows sunning themselves in inches of water on the mud flats that act as hot water heaters. The blue bird sky, we enjoy most of fall through march ,will provide great opportunities to sight-fish those redfish, throughout the colder months. Schools of redfish can number 3- 50+ gathering in the warmer sunbaked waters. Catches in the 15- 40 fish in a half day are not uncommon!

The trout fishing is still going strong. The larger gator trout fishing slows, replaced by numbers of smaller fish in the 13"-18" range. I Look to target trout on the higher tides with moving water, saving the low tide for bruiser reds. Last week our best day was 12 legal reds and 2 oversized which were all sight fished. We had a few with their backs out of the water, belly crawling in 5" of water. On the same trip, once the tide moved 1/3 the way in the bite slowed considerably. So that’s when I moved us to the deeper ledges in search of trout.

The trout have been on fire eating the plastics. Chartreuse/cacahoe minnow has been the color/pattern working best. We had 20 trout in their last hour, I stayed for an extra hour and I got in the action. Otherwise, the black drum will be moving into the deeper holes and creek corners. We will target them with live shrimp or crab in the St. Johns River or Nassau Sound for the larger bull drum which can go in excess of 60 pounds.

I’m Capt. Drew Mesiano and I have been fishing, diving and surfing Florida waters since I was 8 years old.

I specialize in the great light tackle and fly fishing of northeast Florida. From the ancient city of St. Augustine to the old docks of Fernandina, with Jacksonville and the St Johns River in between, northeast Florida's inshore fishing offers many great opportunities. Predominantly searching for redfish and trout, we have a seasonal mix that keeps the rods bent all year long. Flounder, cobia and tarpon to name a few.

I also schedule tarpon trips in the Florida Keys. (may)
