Lost in Central America

Blog written by Ricky Hitchcock

Starting in the last week of May a friend and myself will be traveling throughout all of Central America for the next three months. During our adventures we will be posting photo's of surf, nature, culture, and whatever else we find along the way. Also, we will be sharing stories from our thoughts and daily experiences throughout the trip. Check us out as we get deeper in the drift!

Segundo Destino

Over the past few days we had been scoring epic waves at our first stop, but it was time to try our luck elsewhere or atleast that’s what we thought. We decided to head south to the all famous Popoyo, Nicaragua. We were in search of the year-round off-shore winds and the perfectly groomed A-frames that litter the coast, like most the travelers that visit Nica. We set out early one morning for the 7 hour trip, everything seemed to be going so smoothly, but there is always some kind of twist here in Nicaragua. Once we made it to Managua we had to Unload from one taxi and reload into another taxi that would take us the second half of the trip. The taxi ride was actually quite enjoyable, lush forest, mountains and volcanoes lined the highway and provided for an exciting voyage. Our arrival in Popoyo is where the expedition took its crash. The so called off-shores were non-existent and the waves were hardly up to par. To give you a better idea of the conditions picture Florida on a chest high blown out day, winds about 20 knots and currents ripping down the beach, we were not stoked! To make matters worse when we checked into our new “home”, we were told that they could only accommodate us for two nights, which they had neglected to tell me before we shelled out the cash for the very expensive cab ride. On top of “hotel popoyo”  not being able to accommodate us they were also not very willing to help us find another spot to stay or very helpful at all in that matter. I was furious, when I spoke to the woman via email (I wont say names) she was very short but made it seem that it would be no problem for us to be there and never told me that they were full after two days!!! We sucked it up because what were we going to do? The next morning wasn’t any better. The waves were better than the previous day but still not “the famous popoyo” conditions. It was about chest high and fairly clean, it reminded me of a decent day back home…not Nicaragua. We surfed for about and hour and as the tide went out, so did the waves. Hopefully we can score down here, but for now ill just call it “popoy-no”.
