The world was a different place in 1982; music was fed to you by either radio or MTV (who at the time only played music videos all day and night) and alternative music like The Smiths, A-ha and Flesh for Lulu were making a place for themselves in the industry. That same year and a British band named Modern English broke through the music scene with a single that shaped a lot of us that were young and impressionable during those days. ”I Melt With You” made the sound track for the hit movie Valley Girl and became a song on many of our internal soundtracks. That single started a career for Modern English that catapulted them into the music industry without a look back allowing them to create seven studio albums including last year’s aptly titled Soundtrack.
Formed in Colchester, Essex, England in 1979 by Robbie Grey on vocals, Gary McDowell on vocals and guitar, Michael Conroy on vocals and bass initially as The Lepers; Modern English was born when Richard Brown joined on drums and Stephen Walker rounded up the alternative, groundbreaking sound on keyboards. Their debut album Mesh & Lace in 1981 reached #5 on the UK Indie Charts forging a strong Joy Division influence. 1982’s After the Snow had a more Duran Duran/Simple Minds activated sound with even stronger keyboards. During their career Modern English produced 7 studio albums and 11 singles including 2010’s Soundtrack which was released alongside the reissued Stop Start from 1986.
The original lineup has regrouped and is now touring the US and making a stop in Melbourne, Florida to headline the free 18th Annual Melbourne Main Street Fall Festival Kick-Off Party in downtown Melbourne on Friday, September 23rd, 2011. The music starts at 6PM with local bands Ironwood and Mary Pastorius and the party continues until 12:30 AM. The juried art show, Kid’s Zone and more music will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
Don’t miss melting and remembering with one of the most influential alternative rock bands from the 80’s with new and old songs. Also performing during the weekend will be new and upcoming nationally and internationally touring bands and artists such as Beebs and Her Money Makers, The Supervillains and Groove Stain. This is a free, family friendly event that hosts artists and performers from around the world that will leave you wanting more!
