Dickey Betts at Capt Hirams

I spent last night dancing in the sand under a full moonlight to Dickey Betts & Great Southern. And there is only one place to do such a thing as that around here, and thats Captain Hiram’s in Sebastian.

When Capt’n  Kean’o  and I first arrived, there were these young bucks on stage belting out The Doors and Hendrix that would have made both Jim’s proud! You could almost feel the spirit of the era floating through the crowd as they played songs from bands like Led Zeppelin and Lynard Skynard. Except hippies and bikers weren’t beating each other up, they were jammin’ as one!
Vintage is not only what they play, but who they are. A local band out of Merritt Island, these boys have a hearty future ahead of them, as far as I’m concerned.
It does my spirit well to see young guys digging out the sounds from my past…You can check them out on Myspace at www.myspace.com/vintagetakesyouback .

Dickey Betts & Great Southern, what else does one need to say? Dickey Betts has been active in the music world since 1960 and the long list of his musical accomplishments boggles ones mind. But nothing begins to boggle the mind like his amazing skills on one of the many works of art that he uses as his tool. The stage was full of amazing classic Les Paul’s  and about mid-show, Dickey whipped out THE most beautiful candy apple red, mother of pearl inlaid, Fender Stratocaster I have ever seen. His distinctive voice is immediately recognizable with so many amazing tunes it told me all I need to know about what I was witnessing under that full moon dancing in the sand, a living legend.
Dickeys son Duane was on stage with him for a most special added touch. And their newest member, drummer Garret Dawson was incredible.

Some of you may not know that Dickey is a good ‘ol Florida boy born in West Palm Beach and chose to stay a Floridian now residing in Osprey, Florida, truly keeping things
Great in the South.

Captain Hiram’s was wonderful as always, but seemed like it was even more fun this time! It’s a wonderful place, safe enough to bring your 5 year old to witness such incredible venues as this one. And there were several young tot’s there having a grand ‘ol time rockin’ out with their parents. The security at Capt Hiram’s is seriously top notch, seriously.
Mary was our server and the girl deserves a standing O for her work. She got me ice-cold Corona’s one after the other before my last was even empty.

Till next time~ stay stoked!
