Cold Snap Challenges FL Wildlife

Florida’s wildlife has been hit hard by cold temperatures this winter. Here are a few ways to help:

Pawprint icon If you see distressed or dead wildlife, contact FWC’s 24-hour hotline at 888-404-3922
Pawprint icon Contact your state senator and state representative and ask them not to cut funding for the manatee rescue and rehabilitation program, which is a part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s budget. This money helps Florida’s three critical care facilities provide vitally needed emergency treatment for injured and sick manatees.

Pawprint icon Buy a wildlife license plate. Purchasing a specialty license plate helps pay for research and monitoring for some of our most vulnerable wildlife. The Wildlife Foundation of Florida offers manatee, panther and sea turtle plates, and the money collected goes to the FWC and other organizations to support those animals and their habitats. The Conserve Wildlife plate depicts Florida’s threatened black bear, and money from that plate provides funds for many other kinds of wildlife. Go to http://www.buyaplate.com/ for more information.

Unseasonably cold weather has affected Florida’s iconic wildlife, including manatees, sea turtles, crocodiles, saltwater fish.

In the first six weeks of 2010, over 300 manatees were found dead, mostly from the frigid temperatures -- and cold-stressed manatees continue to be rescued. Agencies and volunteers collected over 4,500 stranded sea turtles, many of which survived after treatment. And over 100 endangered crocodiles have perished in the cold weather.

Scientists say that extreme temperature shifts -- both cold and warm -- are associated with global climate change.
