Unseasonably cold weather has affected Florida’s iconic wildlife, including manatees, sea turtles, crocodiles, saltwater fish.
In the first six weeks of 2010,
over 300 manatees were found dead, mostly from the frigid temperatures -- and cold-stressed manatees continue to be rescued. Agencies and volunteers collected over
4,500 stranded sea turtles, many of which survived after treatment. And over
100 endangered crocodiles have perished in the cold weather.
Scientists say that extreme temperature shifts -- both cold and warm -- are associated with global climate change.
