This week in the Tropics 9/7

Our very busy Hurricane season continues this week with Tropical Storm Paulette and Depression 18.

Paulette is east of the northern Leeward Islands moving WNW at 3 kt.  It’s moving in a general west-northwestward to northwestward motion with slightly faster speed expected during the next several days.  Currently packing winds of 40 mph, modest additional strengthening is expected during the next couple of days as the Storm heads north into the Atlantic.

Tropical Depression Eighteen is centered near 15.7N 21.2W at 07/1500 UTC or 160 nm E of the Cabo Verde Islands moving W at 9 kt.  With 35 mph winds it is expected to strength and take the name Rene.  This storm is following a similar path as Paulette and will likely end up heading north into the Atlantic where it will eventually die out.

Since both of these storms are forecast to strengthen and spend time in the middle of the Atlantic they have a very good potential to send us a swell later in the week.   Keep an eye out for this weekend!
