Help with buying a shortboard?

Hey guys, so I’ve been surfing on and off for about 4 years now and am an intermediate, average surfer (can do snaps, cutties, floats). I live in Auckland, NZ  https://snaptube.cam/ which is known to be very inconsistent for surf, however our west coast can still get good often. Anyway, I surf a 5’9” x 19” x 2 5/16 (26.3L) JS Monsta box in Hyfi construction. It goes GREAT between 2-4ft, however the second it gets solid, say 3-5ft, I lose a lot of the control and stability I get in smaller surf. I end up planing the water a lot and cant control my speed. Now being 5’9” and about 68kg I wouldn’t assume the board is too high litres. Is this due to the fuller, flatter outline of the Monsta Box and epoxy construction, or do I need to improve my surfing?

I’m very close to snagging a CI “Fever” in 5’10” x 18 5/8 x 2 5/16 (26.5L). Its a much slimmer outline and a bit more performance oriented. Would this help in more solid surf, even with the tiniest bit more litres?

Any thoughts? Thanks.

RE:Help with buying a shortboard?

I've not ridden a JS Monsta Box but looking at the specs and reviews it is designed for easy paddling and getting speed on smaller waves so It's not a suprise that it can get a little loose and floatty on larger faster waves.
