Toots & the Maytals In Concert Nov. 18th 2010

This past Thursday, November 18, reggae legend Toots & the Maytals played at Captain Hiram’s Resort in Sebastian, FL.   This outdoor riverside venue is always an amazing place to see shows, and this night was no exception.  It was a beautifully clear November night, and the temperature was perfect.  A decent-sized crowd came to watch, but it was nice that this show was not as packed as some of the others that have happened at Captain Hiram’s.  We had plenty of room to dance to the killer tunes of Toots & the Maytals!

All in all, their set list was a great mix of slow jams with lots of soul and the faster, upbeat ska tunes.  They played classics such as “Pressure Drop,” “Reggae Got Soul,” and “Funky Kingston,” along with a few covers such as John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” and Richard Berry’s “Louie Louie.”  During the faster songs, Toots would really heat up and start dancing and jumping around, living up to his wild reputation. He interacted a lot with the audience, at times getting us to dance, jump, clap, and sing along!

Everyone was in a good mood with the great music and the perfect Florida Fall weather, and the vibe was decidedly happy and groovy.   The sound was infectious and hardly anyone in the audience could refrain from dancing!

After about a 90-minute set, Toots & the Maytals said goodnight, but the Sand Bar went wild and requested an encore.  We still had not heard their classic tune “54-46 Was My Number.”  So the band took the stage again and gave us a long encore with an incredible, extended version of 54-46.  This was definitely the pinnacle of the show and the best song they played all night!

I loved Toots’ energetic presence and his raspy, soulful voice.  Likewise, all the players were very tight and delivered!  Another great night at Captain Hiram’s was had by all.
