August Fishing Info from Chris Cameron

Large schools of greenies offshore...

Hope everyone’s June and July were great. We have finally been blessed with a few weeks of great fishing weather as it looks like the summer is finally upon us. That also means the afternoon lightning storms, so be careful.  This month should be pretty cool! I have already noticed the large schools of greenies offshore and most have been holding a few fish. Sabiki a few and troll them around the school. We had a few nice kings and some fun fighting bonita on them. You can also try to jig the bait pods.  Use your normal Cobia bucktails from Handler Fishing Supply tipped with a whole squid. This is also the time of year the cobia show up again.  Keep a close look out for turtles and mantas as well.

Rumor is red snapper is opening this month for a few weekends. You should not have any problem catching them! I had several this month in the teens trolling for kingfish on pogies. Pelican and 8A have plenty of reds on them. If you want to venture out a little deeper there’s always the 21 and 27 fathom.  Basic bottom rig consists of an 8-10 oz egg sinker with 6-8 foot of 80lb mono and an 8/0 hook. Watch your machine and when you drop down reel it up a few cranks. There are many different things you can use as well. I have caught them on almost everything, Pins, pogies, squid and frozen sardines. If they are there and they’re hungry it doesn’t really matter.

Another cool fishery we have is shark fishing. This is a lot of fun for the family. It’s fairly easy and if they’re biting its great! There’s no real spots per say, you can go up towards the bight of the cape or towards the pier.  I normally fish in about 10 feet of water and throw the bait towards the shoreline.  Then it’s just a waiting game.  Some nights are better than others of course. I like to use fresh bonita chunked up. I use a 10/0 hook with #9 wire. Be prepared for other types of fish this month, jack crevale, tarpon and a wide variety of sharks.  Get out there and get bent!

Fired Up Charters picked up a great sponsor this month. Pirates Best Marine. They are located here at the port. If there’s anything you need call Scott at Pirates Best, 321-783-0008. We had some major engine issues a few weeks back and he was there all day long between charters to get the problem fixed. Talk about dedication and customer service; thank you Scott! He also has boat storage in a secure environment that’s only .3 miles from Grills ramp. Call if you need a good mechanic!
