2014 ASF Championships Sebastian Inlet

Nothing beats striding through the cold sand before sunrise at your favorite local spot. Colorful tents cover the beach, old and new faces, and the hunger to win. The 2014 ASF Championships were about to go down…

This time the event I was covering was different, I finally got to do it myself! Buddha put SurfGuru in the hands of my buddy Maury and I. At first we had a little bit of a hard time putting up the tent, not knowing how to put the cover on it, but luckily we found a fellow SurfGuru-er named Anthony. We’d set up next to the Fiik Electric Skateboard tent and let me tell you, their boards are super sick. Later on in the day the Coleman’s set up camp next to us and they were sweet enough to watch the tent while we took turns surfing.

Out of the blue I had someone jump on my back and scream, “CHRISTA!!” As I turned around a piece of bleached blonde hair caught my eye and I knew exactly who it was. She rips, does awesome in contests (but that’s the only time I get to see her), and her name is Maddie Maliza! She has this photog that always shoots her, so once he saw that I was her friend he made sure to get a couple shots of me. I was stoked! Major mahalo to David Turko for getting some sick shots of me free surfing just north of the contest. Psh, and Maury said the waves sucked… according to these photos obviously not!

I was amazed by all the talent I saw of kids and adults of all ages at the contest! Congrats to rippers Hannah Blevins for taking the U12 title and Rachel Presti for taking the U14 titles! Young, beautiful ladies who rip; nothing makes me smile more! Also congrats to Chauncey Robinson for his U16 and U18 titles, you killed it! Tommy Coleman seems to always amaze us; as I was walking up to go surf after the contest I see little Boo-Boo carrying 3 trophies, 2 bigger than him! It is so cool to see all my friends doing great and winning!

The ASF wasn’t just surf filled, there is a new frenzy going around the surfing community. It is called Kendama. According to Eva Woodland, “I love Kendama.” As I was walking up the beach just checking out the scene, this caught my eye. I found a group of kids in a circle playing Kendama. If you don’t know what it is, it’s a game where you have a ball stringed to a stick pretty much and you try to get the ball on top of the stick. The raddest girl I saw play was a grom named Avery Aydelotte, she was doing full on tricks that I could only dream of doing!

All in all, the weekend was great! Got some rad photos, some sick surfing, and got to see old friends. So excited for the next season to start and see how things go this year around! Good luck to all contestants and don’t forget to go out and shred...Christa xx CJ Sporty! 2014 ASF Championships Sebastian Inlet
