Feb 27, 2010 - NEW SMYRNA (THE INLET)

Just Plain Nasty!!! Cold, dreary, and rainy.
Based on the ankle-slappers that I saw when I drove down the Beachway Ramp, it was hard to imagine there would be any waves down at the Inlet. But the Inlet has a way of amplifying and so it was Saturday for the Volcom  Seacow contest.

I got there around 9:30AM and the waves looked more fun than I would have expected. It was glassy, clean, with a light offshore wind. There were little two footers with long lefts and rights rolling in. The water temp was around the high 50’s and air temp seemed fortyish. “It’s so cold I don’t even wanna go in,” a nearby contestant declared. But they all went in and I’m sure having some fun little waves to ride warmed them right up. Even on the beach good times were had…that is until the Baby Powder Incident (see photos below).

I hate to harsh everyone’s mellow, but this kind of thing just has to STOP!!!
Surfers at a contest having fun??? How extremely uncool!
Don’t they know that this is serious business and that their time could be better spent scowling at the competition, trying to psyche them out?
What were they thinking?

In short, baby powder was recklessly strewn about the place with no thought to the permanent injuries that could have been sustained by the victims. The whole thing seemed to be started by a mysterious Black Ninja who was seen lurking about.
Where was the Beach Patrol? I only hope that the photos below can help the authorities apprehend these rowdy scofflaws.

Enough said, back to the contest. As the tide went out, the size jumped up a little bit and so did the power with the rights now being far better than the lefts. Several hits per wave, less pumping needed to generate speed, little airs punted—I regretted not going on a dawn patrol with the Angry Gull crew.
***Check out the photos and video below.

I’m outta here,
 ren.
