Surfing in Morocco - The season is about to begin at Surf Star!
Just a 3hour flight from Europe, Morocco is becoming one of the most popular and accessible surf destinations for European surfers. Winter is when the surfing in morocco comes to life with peeling rights, hot weather and over 17 surf spots across the south coast. The season gets going in September with the biggest swell of up to 5 or 6 meters. With a vibrant incredibly welcoming culture, sizzling hot temperatures and fantastic quality rights, a surf holiday in morocco is a must do this coming season.
Momo is one of the most experienced local surfers in the area. Last week, we checked out the quiet before the storm to see what’s been happening at his surf camp Surf Star Morocco. We found that Momo had been teaching surfing throughout the sizzling summer. Even during Ramadan in 50+degree temperatures he had been teaching without food or drink in the hours of daylight.
Mohamed and the surf coaches at Surf Star Morocco still manage to joke around with the guests and go for a cheeky surf as the students break for lunch. Guests are no-doubt amazed by their energy levels, “The Moroccan guys are so energetic, we can’t believe they do this in Ramadan, can’t imagine what they are like when the swell gets big in winter! Moroccan surfers are fricken' tough ” says Maria, a surf camp guest with a glowing bronze tan.
Surf Star Morocco, is based in Tamraght, they offer surf holidays for complete beginner surfers, as well as intermediate and advanced levels with video feedback on request. It’s all made easy for you with riad accommodation, tasty tagines and transport yet, you still experience getting to know the local people. There is always a mix of local Berbere people and Europeans to hang out with and have a laugh. There's yoga, paradise valley trips, hammams, souks and more! Tamraght is close to the beautiful Atlas Mountains in one direction and to Agadir city in the other. A small Berbere fishing village Tamraght overlooks the most consistent surf beach in the area Taghazout Beach (aka crocodiles – due to the shape of the land!). With a mixture of hot sunshine, point breaks and reef, beach breaks for beginners and a daily variety of over 17 spots, Morocco has an indescribably welcoming culture and surf scene.
