Don’t say I didn’t warn you! The swells have been coming back to back to back. OK, they conditions haven’t always been epic, but it hasn’t slipped down to freezing here. In fact, the weather has been beautiful and the water is still near 80 degrees. When the Kona’s have blown, the secret spots have been firing. Most 638 people (north of Wiamea Bay) don’t venture off their 7 mile stretch, so the secret spots are firing with 6-8 people. Danny Melhado knows what I am talking about. He stays out of the craziness and surfs less known spots with only a few people. There are probably more sharks than people at these spots, but they are mostly interested in the turtles. Meanwhile, Brandon Campbell has achieved the balance of the mountain and the surf. He moved from the lowland hassle to a nice house above V-Land with a panoramic view from Sunset to V-land and the outer breaks.
I told you in previous articles to book tickets. Flights and housing are cheap. The Eddie ran and probably could have run 3-4 times this year.
I have only seen the guys that came to the Volcom Pipeline Pro and the regular NC guys that come for the winter. And how about our guys that came for the contest? Kyle, Corey, Jensen, Oliver and Blake had shockers. Josie Graves, Ryan Briggs, and Ale Moreda and didn’t accomplish what they wanted to. Devon Thresher and Travis Beckman made a round; but how about New Smyrna’s Nils Schweizer and the Outer Bank new star Brett Barley? Nils put out 2008 World Junior Champion Kai Barger and former WCT’er and Hawaiian legend Pancho Sullivan in one heat, then went on to put out Rob Machado and Pipeline Specialist Mark Healy in his next round, before bowing out in the quarter finals. Brett “the buzzer beater” Barley put out Pipeline Specialists Kaupena Miranda, Reef McIntosh, Nathan Fletcher, Kamalei Alexander, and Dave Wassel, before falling in the Semis. You can bet he will get respect in the OBX, but no waves freesurfing at Pipeline.
February is going to be all time. The crowd will be gone chasing points and the swells will keep coming. I will leave you with a few pics to show you what you are missing.
