Bethune Beach NSSA Southeast North District Contest
Bethune Beach Park - January 23
Story/Photos by Ren Morrison
The flags I saw on the drive down to Bethune were barely fluttering from the wind out of the south. That wouldn’t last very long; but when I rolled into the park the waves almost looked glassy. The surf had definitely picked up. Internet sites were predicting a five and half foot swell with about a thirteen second interval. That translated to four to six foot faces at Bethune Beach with some bigger set waves coming through.
Early on there were some inside waves to be had; even then, the best waves were to be found on the outside. All in all there seemed to be more lefts on offer. And as the day progressed the paddle out was eating up more and more heat time.
The wave size held up as time marched on but the wind intensity started to deteriorate conditions. “It looks like Waimea closing out,” a voice behind me said. Hmmmm. I guess if a grom was on it and you squinted just right it actually could look like Waimea closing out. There were few waves caught per heat but the ones ridden offered some great drops, heaps of spray on well placed cutbacks and an occasional reform on the inside.
To summarize: Good size. Decent form. Brisk wind. Not so many rides. Good vibes. Beautiful day. (And amazingly, not a single complaint heard about the 60 degree water temperature!)
