The 3rd Annual Beach Bash Sports Page Satellite Beach

By Corona and Deuterman Productions

The 3rd Annual Beach Bash took place this past Saturday, July 23 outside the Sports Page in Satellite Beach.  The Sports Page, together with Deuterman Productions, transformed their parking lot into true festival grounds, complete with banners, vendors, and a huge outdoor stage.

The Beach Bash has been Brevard’s biggest summer music festival over the past few years.   This year’s lineup was quite impressive, featuring both local and national bands whose influences ranged from reggae to ska to pop to punk rock.

The day started early, around noon, with Port St. John’s Kaya Uprising taking the stage.  They were followed by Intercoastal (reggae rock, Orlando), local favorites Pakalolo (reggae rock, Melbourne), Tampa’s Bless Ed (roots reggae with horns), The Crazy Carls (local pop rock), and Kaya Vibe (reggae).   It was one of the hottest days of the summer, but that did not stop the masses from turning up ready to rock.  Most rocked their best beachwear, including bikinis, boardshorts, straw hats, etc.  Spirits were sky-high as the crowd danced to great music, hit beach balls back and forth, played games of cornhole, or socialized with a drink from beach chairs brought from home or the Sports Page’s patio tables.

It was one of those events you hear your friends talking about weeks beforehand: “Are you going to the Beach Bash?”  And sure enough, it was so fun to see many friends from all across Brevard County show up for the event.

At night, the party moved inside the Sports Page, with reggae-rock/ska locals Ovni taking the stage.  They had their usual solid performance, starting the “After Party” on a high note.  They were followed by two of the standout acts of the Beach Bash: ska bands The Duppies and UNRB.  Both bands were super high-energy and had the crowd dancing and just really digging their performances.  UNRB had a huge horn section with lots of talent and charisma, including their tuba player who cruised through the audience during one tuba-showcasing tune.  UNRB was followed by Hor!zen, a really unique-sounding band in the self-proclaimed “dirty south dub rock” style.  I loved the addition of the female vocalist who played an amped acoustic; she added a nice soulful element to the Hor!zen sound.

Indeed, I was quite impressed with all of the bands I saw at the Beach Bash, both day and night.  Great, solid performances, great sound, excellent stage presence all around.

Not only did the Beach Bash feature outstanding live bands, but it also showcased two exceptional DJs: Kulcha Shok’s Lance-O from Miami, who is no stranger in the Brevard reggae scene, and DJ Jeff Cox, owner of Cecilia’s night club in Breckenridge, CO.  Lance-O played his usual killer blend of cultural reggae--always a crowd pleaser—and also did an outstanding job MCing the event.  DJ Jeff Cox, a personal friend of event coordinator Robert Deuterman, flew in just to play dubstep for the audience at Beach Bash and was a great hit.  Both DJs killed it all day, but especially at the after party where they made sure the audience kept on dancing until the night’s end.

If you missed the Beach Bash this year, be sure not to miss it next summer!

Also be on the lookout for some more killer shows put on by Deuterman Productions.  Just around the corner--Slightly Stoopid at the Cocoa Beach Pier on August 19th.  Also, we might have just gotten word of some HUGE things going down September 23-25 for the Melbourne Fall Art Festival concerts in the streets of downtown Melbourne, with some big names and an all-day reggae fest on Saturday.  More details to follow on SURF GURU… stay tuned!
