The next NCFL contest is #5 scheduled for October 13th @ New Smyrna Inlet
Welcome to all of our new NCFL members and subscribers to the NCFL Newsletter. This newsletter is the best way to stay informed to what is going on in our district. Sorry that it has been a few weeks since the last Newsletter, but to be completely honest, my professional and personal life remains very busy, and well....Surf's Up!!!!!!!!
First, we would like to say "Thank You" to all who turned out for the Daytona Board Store/Muzzy Surfboards #4 @ Mainstreet Pier...we appreciate your help and support. By the way, the Judging improved tremendously, and we are very grateful for that because it just makes the whole program operate much more smoothly. That being said...we need more judges to volunteer. It's not fair that some members end up judging all day and others do not judge at all. We will be heavily recruiting Judges in future NCFL contests from both the Adult membership as well as the Youth membership. I have been on both sides of the fence as it relates to this matter, and here's my reasoning....I know that many people feel like they pay good money to compete in the NCFL and that they should not have to work when they show up for a contest, been there, felt that way. However, if we are truly about the NCFL and the surfers in our district, would it not benefit them in the long run to learn how to judge? To have the knowledge of what Judges are looking for? It's like a Pro Golfer who doesn't know how to keep his/her own score...or a surfboard shaper who doesn't know how to surf. More importantly, it will teach "giving back", instead of "take, take, take". When I competed in the Youth divisions of the NCFL it was "Mandatory" to judge, otherwise you wouldn't get your points, we can go that route, but I don't think it's necessary, so please, when we call for judges don't run & hide (you know who you are, and I know who you are), step up to the plate and do your part. Teach a kid how to judge. There is a "Judges Course" on the surfesa.org website or contact me and I can get you pointed in the right direction.
Secondly, our Team NCFL will start making their trek to the Outer Banks for the ESA Easterns Surfing Championships in the coming days. We want to wish you ALL a safe trip. To the Adults: I pray that the Ocean God(s) send you the waves you need to advance to the Finals. Since you already have the experience and talent to get you this far, now I wish you the Best of Luck! To the Youths: top 2 waves, maneuvers in the critical part of the wave (the "pocket"), ALL the way to the beach...that means good wave judgement. I suggest that you "get busy" early, get some good scores, and wait for the wave(s) that will allow you to showcase your talent! I wish I could be there in person, for now I'll be there in spirit cheering you on. MOST IMPORTANTLY- HAVE FUN! Charge it, Represent, and bring home some Hardware! SHRED!!!!!!
The next NCFL contest is #5 scheduled for October 13th @ New Smyrna Inlet, hopefully. Online registration will be available soon, as well as points after contest #4 (with the exception of the Finals that didn't run because of weather, those will be completed at contest #5). It is also possible that we may be able to squeeze a contest or two in November and/or December.
ALOHA,
"Chilly" Willey
