“Big Island Night” at the Cocoa Beach Pier, August 27th, 2012

Rich Salick passed away July 2, 2012. He was a prominent member of  the local surfing community as well as an avid supporter for the National Kidney Foundation. Rich and his brother Phil started the Labor Day National Kidney Foundation Surfing Festival, to benefit those in need and suffering from kidney disease. Rich had been a kidney transplant recipient and it was in his nature to help others.

Rich had a way of spurring others into serving. His volunteers for the NKF surfing event number over three hundred members. These volunteers, along with his brother Phil Salick, are dedicated to making this year’s event the most successful in its history in the memory of Rich. Taylor LaBour is one of those many volunteers. She wanted to add something to the event that would help with Richard’s legacy of helping others. “Big Island Night” is that addition. “Big Island Night” is an island themed dinner at The Atlantic Ocean Grille at the Cocoa Beach Pier. It is on August 27th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

Tickets are $25 and are on sale at Oceanotions gift shop at the Pier. All proceeds will be given to the NKF of Floirda. The chefs at the Pier will be preparing food with an island flare and there will be steel drum music. All proceeds benefit the NKF of Florida.

Most importantly it will be a night to honor and remember Rich Salick. Taylor says, “I created this event in honor of Rich Salick because he dedicated his life NKF and I thought this was a good way to honor him. I think Phil Salick would tell us to add his brother’s famous words of See ya and have fun”.

Volunteers NEEDED to deliver BIG NKF Posters to businesses (grocery stores, surf shops, etc).  They will be ready 4 pick today after 1pm, but call Phil Salick to make sure he is there (he's meeting sponsors today).  Gulfcoast paddle out for Rich Salick is Oct 6, 2012 (6pm Public Beach at Anna Maria Island, FL)

VIP/Sponsor Party Needs Donations ~ If anyone has any sort of connection to a liquor store or business, we need to get some liquor donations for the VIP/Sponsor Party on Thursday. If you are able to help in any way on getting some donations, please contact Brenda Brozman at 321-759-8156.

Taste of Brevard ~ We are still accepting items for auction and can use anything as small as a gift certificate to something as large as a surf board or bike. Please bring the items to the office at the Cocoa Beach Pier up until Friday. On Friday at noon we will have a room at the Cocoa Beach Hilton for auction items. Please bring the items to the Hilton on and after this date. 

Surf and Turf ~ Our Surf and Turf was a HUGE success this Saturday at the Cocoa Beach Skate Park. We saw some amazing skateboarding and had a great showing at the event. You can find the pictures on NKF Surf's facebook page. Thanks Scooter!

Contest T-shirts ~ Contest T-Shirts are being printed this week and will be available to volunteers for $5 – on the beach to the public they will be sold for $10. The specialty shirts from Katin and Anarchy will be sold for $15.

You can still pre-register to volunteer as a floater for day/night events, email KimWeisner@bellsouth.net and give her your info, day/night avail ~ we are still in need of donated items & gift certificates and help w/ set up/break down of auction .. you can drop off donated items to the Hilton near Lori Wilson Park

What an amazing day, mahalo nui to all our sponsors, donors, competitors, volunteers & spectators!!!  Sunday's event is uploaded in our album, there will be a CIRCLE OF LIFE PADDLEOUT Sunday at noon in memory of approx 30 fallen loved ones. Tandem surfs tomorrow at 7:00am and there will be a morning service by Christian Surfers.
