Beaches Museum's New Exhibit Highlights
Champion Women Surfers of Northeast Florida
The Beaches Museum & History Park announced the upcoming opening of its summer exhibit, "Mermaids of The First Coast", on Saturday, June 16, 2012. The exhibit will feature women surfers of Northeast Florida and their impact in the sport on the local, regional, national and international levels. The museum will also host a public reception to celebrate the opening the evening of June 16. The reception will feature a fashion show of current surf wear and an opportunity to meet some of the surfers from the exhibit. This is the second in a series of exhibits about surfing in Northeast Florida the museum has presented.
Mitch Kaufmann, exhibit curator and surfing expert, said "this exhibit will bring to light the vast amount of talent among local female surfers who have brought championship surfing titles back to the First Coast over the past forty years. We have more female surfing champions from this city alone than any other city in the United States. It's only natural that they be honored with an exhibit right here in Jacksonville Beach." Kaufmann also curated the exhibits "Surf Legends of North Florida" and "Dropping In, The Rich Skateboarding Heritage of North Florida" at the Beaches Museum & History Park.
Maarten van de Guchte, executive director of the museum, said "We are very excited to have this exhibit. Women surfers from our area are much to be admired for their contributions to the sport and are an important part to our community history."
Taryn Rodriguez-Boette, archivist for the museum, said "Mitch is a legend in the surfing community. It's been great working with him on this exciting exhibit. He puts together a great show."
The museum will host an opening for the show Saturday, June 16 from 7:00pm-11:00pm. The opening is free to museum members and $10.00 for the general public. For reservations to the opening, please contact the museum at 241-5657 or email at Elizabeth@beachesmuseum.org.
