Since we live so close to a freaking ocean, I think we should all be thankful this year that we do. I can't imagine living hundreds of miles from a beach. If you can, I'm sorry to hear that.
One thing I'm thankful for this year is flounder fishing during the winter. Every Thanksgiving I trek down to Sebastian to fish for flounder all day long, rain or shine. I think a lot of people have the same idea that day, or maybe everyone just has off ...

With Halloween right around the corner, October is a scary month…for a mullet.
With the mullet run starting to heat up as the weather cools down, the fishing gets great all over the state. Better watch those paddling hands while you're out surfing because there no reason why a jack crevalle or even a supercharged bluefish won't mistake your fingers for a nice little finger mullet skipping through the waves. I've seen it happen. It's not pretty. You ever seen a grown man cry while ...

Tropical Storm Fay was quite the nuisance for some, except for us fishermen. Fay's inundation of Central Florida left the freshwater tributaries (Seb. River, Crane Creek, Turkey Creek, Eau Gallie River, Goat Creek) flowing like Niagara Falls. Fish of all species love to congregate around flowing water, making these areas prime spots for snook, reds, tarpon a variety of others. The many mosquito impoundments throughout the Indian River Lagoon system are all equipped with culvert pipes that allow ...

Okay, I think something is wrong with me. After last week’s mini-season and an entire week of good visibility, I’ve found myself at times looking under bushes and curbs for waving lobster antennae. I’ve also been sub-consciously clearing my nose for a descent into the deep. Is something wrong with me? Am I alone in this?
Okay, first off, for all you divers out there, the visibility off Sebastian is freaking awesome right now! We dove on Wednesday and were greeted with top to ...

I’ve been working a lot lately at LongDoggers not because I need the money, but because it keeps me in the shade for the hottest part of the day. If I wasn’t working I’d be out there cancerin’ it up under the blazing July sun. My shunning of the sun this summer has helped me catch some pretty nice fish, both inshore and out deep.
The full moon bite offshore was insane this month, from Port Canaveral to the Keys. Guys reported 10-20 mangroves up to ten pounds on the ...

Well, isn't this is weird few weeks for us on the Space Coast? The waves have been awesome, but that water is pretty darn cold! The coldwater upwellings, a result of Ekman transport, the Coriolis effect, and light winds, are invading our waters and making it feel like winter again.

Sure, its nice to cool off in the colder water as a surfer, but if you are a bottom fish living where it is already really chilly, then you aren't going to be that happy. ...

It sure is getting hot outside. Not that you wanted to hear me say it and remind you of this month’s electric bills. Hot weather means something to everyone, and to me it means diving and snorkeling.
What better way to beat the heat than to jump in the water? The visibility has already been clearing up beautifully from Sebastian all the way to the Keys. Why sit in a hot boat all day getting torched by the almighty sun? There’s plenty to see down there…
One way to get wet and ...

Big thanks to the scientist of the day Don Hammond for his expertise and passion for them fish. That guy sure is dedicated to learning everything there is to know about the dolphin and sharing it with anyone who will listen.
The purpose of this trip offshore was to tag a dolphin, at least 25lbs, with one of two satellite tracking tags. One of the ...

Who doesn't love Spring? Seriously? It starts getting warmer, the birds be singing, the bees be buzzin', and the fish be bitin'!
As we surfers peel off our wetsuits and come out of hibernation, so do the fish. Warmer air temperatures heat the surface of the water and draw our favorite pelagic species to the surface. The dolphin fishing was pretty crappy in March and I can attest. We tried trolling three times in March and only caught one small dolphin. I would not consider considering myself a ...

Well, it has been over a month since my last post. Mainly because there has been pretty good surf and most of my shorebound fishing excursions have ended with the rods getting locked in the cab and the wetsuit getting slapped on. School started up again and I have been busy with that - plus living in Orlando doesn't exactly make me the best saltwater ambassador.
A couple weeks ago I did manage to score a trip offshore with my roommate Paul on his new boat, a 34' Luhrs, the "HectaSea". ...

So now when I am in school and get the opportunity to go out of Port Canaveral with some buddies, I will usually jump at the opportunity.

'Tis the season to be singing carols, lighting candles, opening presents and trolling for sailfish off Florida's east coast.
Winter traditionally has been acknowledged as prime sailfish season for the Sunshine State, thanks to a large migration that head south with the birds every year. Cooling water temperatures and a frigid northeasterly flow drive the population of "spindlebeaks" our way until they head back north in spring.
The sheer number of sailfish catches off Florida's east ...
