I went to a sneak preview of Bustin' Down the Door last night in Honolulu. It is a new film about old times and the experiences of Shaun and Michael Tomson, PT, Mark Richards, Rabbit Bartholemew, Ian Cairns and other South Africans and Australians breaking into the North Shore scene and the start of pro surfing. It was shown on a big screen at a regular theatre. If you get the chance to see it, you should. It has already played in SoCal and NY and a few other places. The old photography with new special effects was spectacular; as was the story. It is a great documentary, and I can see it winning prizes at film festivals.
The sneak preview was for people who were and are important in the surf world in Hawaii and was a real who's who. I managed to get in as Beach Marshal for ASP Hawaii and sat next to Senator Fred Hemmings, who introduced himself as "Fred, an old surfer" and behind Rory Russell, with Reno Abillero on the other side. An after party was held at Sam Choy's with free Primo and pupus. It was a nice experience talking to Shaun, MR and Rory and others at the after party.
If it comes to your town, I highly recommend it.
I finally figured out the only reason to be alive is to enjoy it.
