Need a new board, help me decide...

Hey guys,
Just got back a few months ago and I've been riding a 6'4" Flyer 2, but it doesnt seem to float me well enough and seems difficult at times to catch waves on. I am 6'2" tall195 lbs. I'm in good shape, but definitely a little rusty. Looking for a board that will be good for most of the time here in north FL (1-3), but maybe be able to handle some days when we get a little swell (3-5+). I checked out a few boards locally called "Island" shaped by Stu Sharpe in Cocoa beach. One is called "Squash Fish" which is basically a short board that is wider through the tail and a little thicker and wider overall. The measurements were 6'4"x19 5/8x2 3/8...I was thinking I could get a custom that was slightly wider and thicker. The other board is called a "Blunt nosed Fish" which is 6'5"x21"x2 7/16, with more volume up front with a pulled in swallow. I thought I might go with a custom a little shorter. They are both thrusters and both epoxy. Or do I need to get 2 boards eventually? Any opinions, recommendations or suggestions are appreciated...please include dimensions if possible.

Doctors Lawyers Weekend Warriors Event

On Sat Sept 20th, I had the opportunity to surf in the Doctors Lawyers Weekend Warriors Surf Contest. It was really more of a charity event then a contest. It was held at Sebastian Inlet in some small choppy surf, but God blessed us with great weather, wonderful people and the opportunity to give something to a charity. I had my daughter Shannon and my lovely GF Letitia on the beach to support me. I have not even seen the results but saw these photos posted on the Internet this morning. There are some great photos considering the lack of surf. I was really surprised to see all the photos of me surfing!! I have the yellow jersey and the "bald head". I had a great time and met some wonderfull people.

Sometime in the next few days we will be launching a new set of forums and the current ones will be shut down to further posts. With any luck it will get rid of our major spam problem without restricting the forum.

The new setup will require that you create a new profile, username, and password. The good news is that the forum login and the website login will now be the same.

I'll post more info here as I get it.

Surfrider Foundation Sebastian Inlet Chapter September Meeting

We've moved the September meeting back a week so you can go out this weekend and enjoy the National Kidney Foundation Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach. So come on out next weekend, September 12th at 9:00 a.m. at Pelican Beach Park in Satellite Beach. Bring your family along! If you have young children, there is a great playground right next to the gazebo where we meet. We will be discussing the Rockledge ASR issue, Oil Drilling off of Florida's coast, and Beach Renourishment issues in Brevard County.

Long Doggers Beach Challenge 5K Run/Walk

Looking for a radically relaxed good time that helps benefit YOUR local Surfrider chapter and includes fitness, music, refreshments, and beer? Then come out and join the party during the Long Doggers Beach Challenge 5K Run/Walk (3.1 mile) beach run Saturday, September 26 at 6:00 p.m. to benefit The Kelly Slater Project and Surfrider Foundation.

Entry fees are $20.00 from now until September 25, and then $30.00 on race day. A portion of the entry fee will go to Surfrider, and you can register online at www.longdoggerbeachrun.com. This family-friendly health event has something for everyone to enjoy - plus, you will be helping your chapter!

Public Meeting on Climate Change

The City of Satellite Beach and Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program are conducting a free public meeting on Tuesday, September 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Satellite Beach Civic Center Auditorium (565 Cassia Blvd) as part of a grant they were awarded through the EPA's Climate Ready Estuaries Program. The goal of the program is to build local ability to adapt to climate change. Speakers will discuss local, regional, and national climate change science and planning issues, focusing primarily on how coastal communities' best prepare for and adapt to the many changes forecast to accompany global climate change. The meeting will conclude with a question and answer session.

Speakers include:
Bob Day - Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program
Tara McCue - East Central Florida Regional Planning Council
Dr. Randall Parkinson - Space Coast Climate Change Initiative
Jim Titus - US Environmental Protection Agency

Looking for surfing instruction

Hey,

My wife, two teens and I are planning on being in Florida for the first week of August (a few weeks from now). We've already done the "here is your 3-foot wide, 16 foot long barge, we'll give you a huge push when a little wave comes in, and then you stand up and say that you can surf" thing.

Now, we'd like to see about learning how to catch waves under our own power, on a board that isn't longer than my Excursion!

Location is flexible. Pensacola would be closest for us, but I suspect the Atlantic would be better (maybe I'm wrong, though?) Daytona, Cocoa Beach, or ??? - we'll go wherever would be best.

I'm totally open to suggestions. It can be an established school, or an individual.

When 'the other woman' is the ocean

We don't have surfers in Ohio. My idea of a surfer was a composite of characters from old Gidget reruns on Nick-at-Nite and the film Point Break- all of whom appealed to me, incidentally.

Surfers were always handsome and tanned, with tousled, sun-bleached hair, a free spirit and a conspicuous lack of pretension.

Imagine my intrigue when, on vacation 13 years ago, I met a guy in a Delray Beach restaurant and discovered through the course of conversation that he was a surfer.

Not that he simply liked to surf - he was a surfer.

The distinction might seem like semantics to some, but I assure you the difference is profound. As attracted to him as I already was, I immediately became more so. We went on a date, and I couldn't wait to tell girlfriends back home that I'd been out with a surfer. He satisfied all my Hollywood-inspired fantasies: He was handsome; he was tan; his hair was often disheveled when not at work (and sometimes even when he was), and he was infinitely free-spirited and unpretentious.

The story of our six-month, long-distance courtship can be summed up as follows: Despite the fact that I was enrolled in and ready to begin college that fall, I wasn't buying textbooks in September.

I was packing clothes and framed photos of grandma and best friends into Jack the Honda and kissing my dad and my scholarship goodbye as I began the 18-hour drive to South Florida to see what would come of my relationship with the surfer.

I couldn't say exactly when the high-gloss finish of my Point Break fantasy began to tarnish. It probably began when my surfer guy showed up dripping wet in board shorts with bare, sandy feet for our evening together.

I was puzzled when he had to interrupt and rewind beach scenes in the movies we rented - not because he'd missed a piece of dialogue but to check out the wave breaking in the background.

I failed to understand the necessity of inconvenient drives by the beach when we had other plans, just so he could see what he was missing.

I noticed that I became invisible and mute before him when a surf video was playing in the vicinity. I realized he couldn't get out of bed in the morning to go to breakfast, but he could easily get up before dawn on three hours' sleep if the waves were accommodating.

When things got more serious and we started discussing the future, I was pleased to know that he, like me, wanted to experience life in different parts of the world, but perplexed to find that our list of possible destinations was confined to the perimeters of continents.

Don't worry - this is not a break-up story.

This is a story of a starry-eyed girl from the Midwest who found out, over the course of many years, that surfing might be a pastime for some - but for surfers, it is something they are.

At times, I've called it his addiction; at times, I've considered it "the other woman." I've gotten mad; I've gotten jealous; I've actually taken a whack at his board with my shoe. (I know the surfers out there are cringing in disbelief.)

But I've also discovered that when he comes home from a good session in the ocean, he's in an excellent mood - he's lighthearted and frisky and carefree. I've found that he has an incredible respect for the sea, and an impressive knowledge of marine life and tides and weather systems.

He's a lover, not a fighter - unless you happen to cut him off on a wave. I've learned that my man possesses the enviable talent of being able to change from work clothes to baggies in the middle of a busy parking lot with nothing but a towel for cover and nary a butt cheek to be seen.

I've learned some personal lessons as well. I now know the difference between Point Break and a genuine surf flick. I know the difference between wind chop and swell, a fish and a big gun, a grom and a kook.

Most importantly, I've learned that my surfer guy - who has been my surfer husband for the past nine years - just wouldn't be who he is if he weren't a surfer.

He has more than compensated for any time he left me disappointed because an ample swell unexpectedly made it to the shores of South Florida. He treats me like a princess. He gets giddy when he takes the kids to the beach.

I love to hear him describe how he almost made that wave, what it felt like in the barrel, how peaceful he feels when he's out there in the lineup. I'm convinced there is saltwater flowing in his veins.

I still hate feeling the grit of sand under my feet in the shower, and finding wet baggies dripping in my dirty clothes basket, and encountering melted wax on the seat of my car, but I know it comes with the territory when you are in love with a surfer.

And I would never again whack his board with my shoe; those things are expensive, and we share a checking account.

Some SUP Barney at the jetty Sunday was threating to run people over and break there legs with his SUP.About 10 min. later the lifeguard sounded the horn & waved him in only to be greated by a St.Lucie sheriff officer dont know what happened next but the SUP dude was gone.

Bethany Hamilton Beach Cleanup

The Central Florida Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is having a beach cleanup along with Dillards and Ocean Minded. Pro surfer Bethany Hamilton will be there and we would like to invite all Surfrider members to come out to meet Bethany and help with this beach cleanup at Indialantic Boardwalk on Friday, July 31 from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM.
