After my short hiatus from Surf Guru, I am pleased to come back to some of the greatest news to hit the beachside. MATT COSTA @ CAPTAIN HIRAMS!!!? For those of you familiar with the singer/songwriter, I'm sure you feel the same way. For those of you that aren't, you are in for another one of those events that you'll thank me for later. Fan or not, here's some things you may not have known about this talented musician.
Matt Costa: Lives in Huntington Beach and is now on Brushfire Records (co-founded by Jack Johnson). Recently released his 2nd full length album "Unfamiliar Faces", the follow album to his 2005 "Songs We Sing". Has done Tours all over the world including Jack Johnson tours and all the big music festivals(Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza etc.).
But Costas goals weren't always to become an International act. Although he played instruments he was more focused on skateboarding. In 2005, just as he was getting ready to turn pro, a life-altering leg break would lead him to discover songwriting. With 18 months of recovery time, Costa started playing simple melodies and recording on a 4 track. He made and distributed some of his home made CDs around his So-Cal area. one of them just happened to make it to Tom Dupont, guitarist for No Doubt. He offered to record songs for him at his home studio. With a little help From Dupont and Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, The Shins) Songs We Sing was done in no time.
Along with Costas 2 full-length CD's, he also contributed to the Curious George soundtrack. The track is called "lullaby" and features Costa and Jack Johnson. Although his songs have always been very vibrant, feel good songs, he gets a little darker on "Trying to lose my mind" from his new album. The song was based on a dark period while he was recovering from his surgery. Often he would have mind-numbing panic attacks which he later discovered were attributed to the pain medication.
Now healthy and not in crippling pain, Costa will grace us with his folk melodies at Captain Hirams on Thursday June 12th. Perfect beach music if you ask me. See ya soon! Be sure to check back after the show for pictures. Who knows, you may just see yourself :)
