Lay Day Called at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola

SAQUAREMA, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Friday, May, 25, 2012) – In accordance with the predicted forecast, a decrease in swell size at the Itauna Beach point break has forced officials to call a lay day at the 2012 Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola. Quality waves in the waist-to-chest high range are breaking in both directions, but the long interval in between sets led organizers to call off competition for the day.
A new call is set for 9:30am (local time) for the start of Round of 16 which henceforth, begins the man-on-man elimination of the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime. The Finals are set for Sunday, where U$ 40,000 in prize money and 6,500 ASP World Ranking points will be distributed amongst the competitors.
All of the remaining surfers in the competition have chances mathematically of making it into the list of the Top 10 surfers on the ASP World Ranking that make it onto the 2013 Dream Tour. Only Kai Otton (AUS) is within the Top 22 ranked surfers of the ASP World Tour who automatically qualify for the next year.
Making an immediate impact on the surfing world since their arrival onto the ASP, Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Kolohe Andino (USA) have not been able to maintain their status within the Top 22 in the first three events of the World Tour, but have remained in qualification for the 2013 Dream Tour via the ASP World Ranking.
With surfers like Jean da Silva (BRA), Willian Cardoso (BRA) and Matt Wilkinson (AUS) still active in the contest, crucial points earned at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime will be a deciding factor in this year’s ranking.
The Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola is brought together by Adding Sports and sponsored by Coca-Cola and Quiksilver, along with the support of the State of Rio de Janeiro through the Secretary of Sports and Leisure, the City of Saquarema, CCR Via Lagos, 900 Graus, the Saquarema Surfing Association and the Rio de Janeiro Surfing Federation.
